Located in Fort Royal on Île Sainte-Marguerite, in the Bay of
Cannes, the Museum of the Iron Mask and the Royal Fort (former Museum of the Sea)
is a museum of underwater and terrestrial archaeology, which gathers objects found in ancient shipwrecks around the
Lérins Islands as well as the remains of Roman cisterns. It also houses the
famous cell of the Man with the Iron Mask!
It occupies the part called "du Vieux Chateau", the oldest of the Fort Royal.
We visit the Roman cisterns and the first floor, where are presented the underwater archaeological material from the Roman and Sarrazine wrecks of the Tradelière and the Batéguier (ceramics, cargoes of amphorae, glasses ...) and the fragments of Roman murals from the earth excavations of the island Sainte-Marguerite.
A space dedicated to temporary exhibitions opens onto a vast terrace overlooking the sea facing the Cannes coast, from the Southern Alps to Cap d'Antibes and Esterel.
In the corner of the building, the Tower of the Rock would have been raised in the Middle Ages for the defense of the island, often besieged by Saracen raids. It was raised around 1860, by a semaphore that allowed the transmission of aerial telegraphic messages.
Finally, as you know, the seabed of the Lérins Islands is rich in protected species and remarkable habitats. To meet the challenges of preserving this natural heritage, the CPIE of the Lérins Islands and Pays d'Azur animates the Mediterranean® Biodiversity Info Point®. It is a space, where the seabed is reconstituted by aquariums, which is dedicated to the information and awareness of the public at Fort Royal.
