Located in the islands of Lérins on the île Sainte Marguerite, Fort Royal is an important fortification of type "Vauban".
These are the Spaniards who, during the thirty years war, occupied the island and built the fort of 1635 to 1637. After their defeat and their departure, the French army was completed to fortify the site. At its military function was added from 1637 to prison that lasts until the 20th century.
Classified Monument Historique in 1927, the fort lost its military value by a downgrade in 1944. It was acquired by the city of Cannes in 1995.
Today, the Fort welcomes visitors on its walls, in its Museum and youth groups in the barracks for sports, heritage and ecological stays.

For those who love history, they will be able to visit the Fort Royal or was locked up "the man in the iron mask" *.
*It is one of the most famous prisoners of the history of France, as the mystery that still surrounds its existence, excites our imagination and is the subject of films and novels. It was Voltaire who launched the legend in the "siècle de Louis XIV". And Napoleon, himself, would seems wanted to know the secret of this riddle.

For fans of submarine and terrestrial archaeology, the Museum of the sea and "Méditerranoscope" are also located in Fort Royal and are part of the visit.

October-March open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:30 to 1: 15 p.m. and from 2.15 pm to 4.45 pm
Closing days: 1 January, 1 may, 1 November, 11 November, 25 December.
